Realist by nature

Birds are my passion: I try and freeze in a single frame the mystery, the beauty, and the spirit of my subjects. Watching a bird in flight becomes a blur of colour in a flash of time. But in a painting one can freeze a moment and capture the magic, the mystery, and that energy for eternity. Many people who have something of a misconception that artists are slightly touched. In fact, they are half right - seemingly more so with bird artists.

When I paint birds, animals or portraits of people, especially kids, l seek my inspiration, not from my inner self, nor from emotions from my inner soul, but paint life from life itself. The task l set myself is to try and capture the true essence of the subject, in birds it’s the essence of a life form that can float on air, something that encapsulates the colour of flowers, the wings of the spirit and the ferocity of a lion. I try and freeze in a single frame the colours, shapes, patterns, energy, mystery and magic, the luminescence and the spirit that determines their existence. I see those qualities in all my subjects, not only in birds. Our lives, our being, our ways, the minutes of each day, our thoughts and our decisions are surrounded by exquisite detail in every form, be it in shape or colour.

I am a child of the land driven by an explorers spirit and by the enthusiasm for the life form as we know it in it’s many guises. I feel l must make it tangible, as real as to actual life sharing with humanity my God given talent.

Fat Tuesday

Fat Tuesday hosts an exhibition of canvases by Molo Mimi of Cape Town done in the technique often referred to as "free stitch"  It is achieved using a sewing machine, by disarming the settings and using the darning stitch; the needle roams the fabric with the guidance of ones hand. With a firm control of the technique, fine detail can be achieved. Various materials and techniques assist the process, which allow for sewing over many threads that would otherwise get tangled.

All fabrics used are collected off-cuts, old swatch books and clothes; that would otherwise be thrown away. The fabrics are shredded using a rotor blade and can also be cut into specific shapes. Mohair, wool and the various threads incorporated are donated from people's scraps and excess.

Since the last newsletter I have had my first and very successful open day. Thanks to all the readers who supported me. I was very fortunate to give some of my lovingly restored pieces a new home. I hope that they will make their new owners as happy as they have made me! Their places have been taken by some funky newcomers dressed in beautiful colours and some stately old Victoriana - looking for someone to take good care of them.

I have also added to my stock a number of newly upholstered Edwardian chairs, an early 19th century dining room suite and a gilded drawing room suite with checkered upholstery - to die for!!!! The Meakin ware collection has grown and they make ideal Christmas gifts!

Gina Trotter

Interior Designer

Having had a passion for art and colour since childhood, I decided to enter the field of interior decorating. I completed my studies with Birthe Gibbons School of decorating and design 2001. Whilst studying I worked in the interior decorating industry.
I then travelled for four years around America and Europe gaining valuable life and work experience and exposure to other cultures.

Returning to South Africa in 2005 I joined Andre Kleynhans Living. My duties included decorating and  paint techniquing in both residential and commercial contexts.

Whilst running my own business, Meta Interiors, I completed both residential and commercial projects such as the Gladdington Botique Hotel, and a Durban Heritage Home which later appeared in the Conde Nast with interior Decorator Carl Fitchen,.

In 2007 I exhibited at the Durban Decorators on Display at the Queensbridge Estate, and at the Home makers Expo where I was awarded silver for the presentation of a paint technique kitchen.

I took a break from the decorating industry and completed a year of Montessori teacher training, and am currently in sales. However, I wish to re-enter the decorating industry with a view to a long term career.
